Sara Jane Gibson from our Child Life Department specializes in the education needs of children with cancer. Sara Jane will be speaking at this month’s Rainbow of Hope meeting. She will answer questions about IEPs, 504 plans and classroom accommodations, as well as answer question about homebound teaching. She will also have resources available for psychologists in our area that can test your child for learning and processing problems, so that we can assist you in getting the best educational services for your child.
Sara Jane is also available to attend school conferences between you and your child’s teachers and help facilitate a classroom plan that works for your child.
If your child is newly diagnosed and getting ready to return to school after an absence for treatment, Sara Jane is also available to go back to school with your child. She will provide education to classmates and teachers about your child’s cancer and help your child acclimate back into the classroom setting.

Rainbow of Hope is a family-driven support group held the fourth Thursday evening of each month. We begin each meeting with a meal together at 6:15 p.m. in the Tower Dining Room on the 3rd floor of CMC-Main near the cafeteria. After dinner, parents will attend the school discussion, while the children (patients and siblings- 3 years old and potty trained to 17 years old) attend a group that is lead by our Child Life team. Children will engage in therapeutic activities and discussions specific to their age.
